Vampire TV Drama/Show

Representation of gender and sexuality within different types of TV Shows.

In any TV show, men are always seen as the dominant character, whereas women are seen as those who are weak and are exploited for men's needs, for example sexuality. In the TV Show, Vampire diaries, the main character is a women, Elena Gilbert who falls in love with a vampire Stefan Salvatore; however its not a happy ending as his evil brother Damon plans to wreck his relationship. From only knowing about the 3 main characters, we can already see that Elena is going to be used as a sex object
The main typical storyline for programmes such as the vampire diaries is that the young human woman falls in love with a aged vampire disguised in a young mans body, which of course does not end well. As the vampire is the man, it automatically gives the more power towards the other characters especially women, therefore showing how gender plays a big part in vampire TV shows, even in society.
Watching a few clips from Vampire Diaries I have realised that whenever Stefan or Damon are shown, they have much more of high key lighting even though some may see then as the villains bad. Whereas when Elena is shown, she is presented with more of a low key lighting which could connote that she is more in danger than anything else.

^NEED TO FINISH. just saying.

Media Magazine Conference; 13.12.12♥

The conference we attended on Thursday at Logan Hall was beyond what I actually expected;those of you who didn't come missed out, even though we've been told to write our notes and feedback from what we thought of it, the actual presence of being there and experiencing it was completely different. Even though I had searched what was the schedule of the day a few days earlier, I was genuinely shocked by what we got told and the things we learnt.
Our first 'lecturer' was Professor Martin Barker, who was speaking mainly about Media Violence and how it affected many people. The four types of Intense Engagement were through, Cinema, Comic books, TV and Video Games. There was a successful campaign to ban the comic book which included The Mighty Shaggur as it had too much violence and sexual references.
The next speakers were very close friends from a very young age, Jolyon Rubinstein and Heydon Prowse who are extremely inspirational. We had a question and answer session with them about how the two got into the media industry and what they has been working on. We saw many different clips from there programme which is aired on BBC3, "The Revolution Will Be Televised" and I personally think that I learnt a lot out of the answers they had given us, mostly because they related more to out generation and frankly because they were hilarious! There programme includes events that are shown on the news and are in the public eye, but they show it from OUR point of view. I would defiantly recommend everybody watching it, as it is better than the usual crap we watch. They have also done a sketch called "Will you be my friend" which we also got to see.

Pete Fraser was another speaker, and was the one asking the questions to Jolyon and Heydon. His speech was VERY helpful as he is a former head of Media Studies and regularly contributes to Media Magazine. His 9 keywords for Media are; Research, Planning, Evidence, Ideas, Feedback, Logistics, Equipment  Production and Reflection. He has a very useful blog which will come in handy especially when we all start our production work.
BLOG; www.petesmediablog.blogspot.com
for all you tweeters, i suggest you follow his TWITTER; @PetesMediaBlog
We were then introduced to 6 media students who were now working in the Industry in one way or another. This part of the conference was actually interesting, because from all the six different scenarios we learnt that to get into any part of the media industry, whether its behind the big screens or journalism, EXPERIENCE AND DEDICATION IS REQUIRED!
We were then introduced to Dr Shakuntala Banaji who talked about Global Media and the poverty within the world (especially India). She told us about all of her visits, and how it was like to see young children without ANY technology, were some thought a camera was a hammer. She also said that in places like India, children as young as 3 were allowed into watching 18+ films, just because there parents wanted to go and see it.
Paul Lewis was someone else I found extremely interesting, he is a journalist for The Guardian, and he was talking about how social media has impacted the news and how breaking events are reported directly from twitter, facebook our youtube and how they quickly travel around the world. He helped my understanding on what journalists have to do, and how things like twitter can help them, but at times be a problem for them too. He was closely linked to the articles on the Riots last August, and was proudly the second highest retweeted account on tweets related to the riots.
for breaking news updates, follow- @PaulLewis
And finally, the man I had been looking forward to ALL week, Corin Hardy, a music video producer for Ed Sheeran&Devlin, Biffy Clyro, The PRODIGY and many more. His work is absolutely amazing, like seriously! He has been directing and making films from a very young age, and is in love with horror, which is why we engaged with him more. From viewing his work we got more of an idea with what we could use in our Horror opening sequences. We saw the making of the 'Prodigy- Warriors' music video, which was stunning. It was mostly animated, and he used cigarette boxes and made them come to life.
Prodigy-Warriors
We then also got to see Devlin ft Ed Sheeran's full short film clip for Watchtower.

AMAZING DAY; Y'ALL WHO DIDN'T COME MISSED OUT BASICALLY.

Ideas I'd like to work on.

7-
I would like to work on Sheida's Pitch for Abandoned Camp as after hearing all the pitches  this one stuck by me. Even though it uses one of the main storyline of a horror (final destination), its one that i think will have the best potential to make a good opening scene out of. As of the roles, i would love to help film the opening as i think it will be a good experience, with her storyline.

16-
I also liked Kia's pitch for Asylum of Louisiana. This storyline was also very strong and different  It didn't have vampires falling in love or people getting lost. I especially liked the bit if the pitch were we find out that the doctors and nurses use there patients as a blood bank. This idea is new, and has never been done before. Also with this, I would like to take on the role as the camera person, with the help of others.

25 word pitch for Horror Film

Best friends; Samantha, Demi and Victoria looking for THE apartment. Issues with money results to sharing an apartment with the mysterious Jamie. Will the truth be hidden forever?

^I know it's 28 words, but if you take out the names of the three best friends, then its UNDER 25 words :)

House of Doom Synopsis

Samantha, Demi and Victoria have been best friends since Nursery. They have all grown up together, and now that they are 18, they are all moving out of there parents house into there own little apartment. The summer holidays are about to start, which is why the have chosen this perfect time to move. All four of them have been looking at newspapers and adverts all over in order to find the perfect apartment. Victoria has found an apartment, which is looking for some new room mates, and for the time being , the girls have decided to go with it. Once they have enough money saved up, they will eventually buy a house big enough for all four.

Victoria rings up Jamie (the advertiser for the apartment) and from there conversation she finds out that Jamie is still planning on living there, but needs more people as the rent is too much for just one person. They soon meet up, Jamie is something the girls would never have expected. Tall, brown haired, pale skin, perfect cheek bones. The five go back to Jamie's apartment, and the girls automatically fall in love with it. In no time, the girls agree to sharing the studio flat with Jamie, which results in the 4 of them celebrating with snacks and drinks.

Its been about two weeks since the girls moved in, and there has been no trouble. Victoria is extremely close to Jamie. The two always mess around with the others, play pranks on them, and always watch movie's in the flat, however she has begun noticing some abnormal things about him. He never seems to leave his flat, and the girls realise that they've never been in his room to ever witness what could go on in their. They always claim that his bedroom smells, but they cant quite get there heads around to what the smell could be. He's extremely strong, and never seems to go out during the day. One night, Sam and Demi are all ready to go out to a party, but Victoria stays at home as she has a migraine. The girls leave and Victoria goes into the kitchen to make herself dinner.

Whilst cutting the vegetables, Victoria cuts herself by accident, and in that 0.0 second of her cutting her finger and turning around, Jamie is standing behind her. Victoria jumps back in shock , as she never realised he was at home, let along the kitchen. "You sacred me, When did you get in?" she says. "Oh, i've been at home all day. Let me see what you've done." Jamie takes her finger, but instead of cleaning it with a tissue or putting a bandage on it, he licks it. And he doesn't stop there. He squeezes her finger even more, so that more blood would come out.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" she shouts. "I'm sorry, i just... i just like the taste of blood" Jamie hesitantly replies. "This isn't normal...You're not..you're not.. a vampire..are you.."she hesitantly, slowly says. "Don't be stupid, you know they don't exist." He calmly replies, still looking at the blood all over her hands.

Victoria quickly runs to Jamie's room and opens it. She is gob smacked to see what she witnesses  Every corner of the room seems to have buckets, and buckets full of blood. Every window is covered. It is covered in black. "Don't tell the others. Please. Don't. I don't harm you, or any of your friends. I cant help it." Jamie is pleading. " "Promise me you wont tell Vic. Promise me."

"I promise."

Day by day, Sam and Demi begin to realise big changes in Victoria. She is not the same. She hardly ever sees her friends. She's always in Jamie's room with him.

CLIFFHANGER; has she become a Vampire too; OR is she helping Jamie recover without the others noticing? Will she have to choose between Jamie and her best friends? What will happen.

DUN DUN DURRRRRRR.

Mise-en-Scene

The task involving this was seeing how the mise-en-scene, especially lighting effects the meaning of a scene/shot. The use of the flash light directed at Farhana and Muna's faces show that theses two are the main characters, and what they say is very important.

Analyses on Horror Opening Films

Let The Right One In; Swedish horror film directed in 2008 by Tomas Alfredson.

Scream; American horror film directed in 1996 by Wes Craven. (watched up until  5.17 minutes) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3lSvJ5RXKA

The opening of Scream is very fast paced. Due to it starting of with a phone call, the audience automatically assume that this causes a lot of damage throughout the film. Due to the unknown voice asking Casey, "What's your favourite scary movie?" it connotes that this will be the main storyline. The mise-en-scene of the opening is in a general 'american' style house. It being big and having a porch. The lighting is very low key, not very natural for when someone is at home which connotes that it is done for the purpose of what is about to happen. When we see the outside of the house, the swing seems to be swaying due to the heavy winds which also shows how quiet the neighbourhood is, which suggests that someone is secretly there. There are a variety of camera shots used, such as long shots and close ups. The close ups are used at particular times, which shows the significance of them, showing the viewers Casey's emotions and in a way which the audience can be in her shoes. In addition to this, the camera is panning throughout the opening which also could have been done so the views can see from the point of view of the character.

The Orphanage; Spanish horror film directed in 2007 by Juan Antonio Bayona
(watched up until 29 minutes) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR-fu8f4BN0&feature=related

The opening of this film is at a very slow pace, not something we would expect from a horror film. We get introduced to the main 3 characters, the adopted child (Simone) and hos two carers. The mise-en-scene generally differs from 3 different scenes. We see the Orphanage, were the audience witnesses happy children playing around, connoting that they do not know what has actually happened to them, therefore they are being told a lie. The house where Simon lives, which use to be an Orphanage too. Most of the lighting for these scenes is very low key and looks very mysterious connoting that many of the films mysterious and horrors take place within this household. The last scene we see is the beach, in which there is a cave, also emphasizing the mysteriousness of the film. When the couple and Simon are walking back from the beach, they are walking towards the dark skies, leaving the light behind, whilst Simon is dropping shells on the floor. All of these conventions represent horror and mystery within the film. There is a lot of diegetic sound used such as the dramatic music when we the the girls playing outside the orphanage.
After watching about half an hour of the opening, there are no major aspects that would make the audience think that this film is scene as a horror, despite the fact of the low key mysteries.

Analyses of Vampire Horror Film Scripts

Shadow of the Vampire (2000);

The layout of the script is formatted in the a shooting script layout; (The term shooting script is the script with scenes arranged in order in which they will be filmed in movie's or TV programmes .This definition has been taken from dictionary.com)  for Shadow of the Vampire seems to be very simple yet effective, but includes a lot of text which at times may confuse the person who is reading it. This is due to the different conventions that have been used.
The use of Scene Headings makes it easier for the actors and directors to know what part they are reading and it also helps organise the layout. These can be scene from the use of either Interior or Exterior, the time of day, and the setting. This is included as we can see that with a new scene, the producer has used "EXT. MEDIEVAL CITY-- DAY". This gives a quick image of what is about to happen and where.

Throughout this script, the use of Narrative has been very important as it shows how the character is supposed to be feeling or acting. Even though we cannot visually see what is written on the script in the movie or TV programme, the way it is acted out gives us the idea. "ALBIN GRAU, producer and art director, walks over: late thirties, something of an Aesthete." This is not scene unless the actors are seen acting out.

Dialogue is important written on the script and when it is being said whilst recording, as without this is the audience will have no idea what is going on. However in silent films, there would be no use of dialogue, however there scripts will be full of descriptive analysis. When the actors are speaking, the dialogue written is bought in to the middle of the page, in order to show that, that is what is being said. This makes it less confusing, as all of the bits that need to be acted out are written to the left.

Representation of Young Women is horror films.

Representations of the two genders, male and female have been seen as very stereotypical in society, especially in the different forms of media, ranging form tv shows/dramas to films or magazines. Men are seen to be the more dominant and heroic ones, whereas women are seen to be the weaker sex in any form.

In horror films women are usually represented as the ones who are powerless and who need to be saved from the killer and the ones who usually have no idea with what is going on around them. Or either the cause of trouble. This shows how conventional the horror genre is, in order of gender. Due to this, women are the ones who are seen to be attacked and killed first in the films, especially young blonde females. We can see this from the horror film, Scream (1996) which within the first 10 minutes sees the death of a female character, resulting from her not co-operating with the killer. This connotes how men are physically and emotionally stronger then women, representing inequality between the two. It shows that they are the dominating gender, which many feminists would disapprove. In comparison to this, in Jennifer's Body the main character is a young female who is completely opposite to the general stereotypical view of women in horror films. She is the dominating character who kills people especially men.

In some films, the killer or the bad guy usually goes out for a women, but then doesn't kill her because of there feminine use. Therefore, women are also seen as sex objects. This shows that in horror films, they are seen to be the beautiful ones whereas the men are the gruesome frightening ones. This can be seen 70s film, Vampira, from the characters look, (skinny waist yet very curvy) she was seen as the beautiful young women. It can also be seen in Sorority Row where there are 4 beautiful young women who are the sufferers of a horrible prank that goes wrong.

However, the roles of women changed as the ways the were being portrayed. By the late 90's, women were seen to be more of the female protagonists  who often had unisex names. An example this can be scene in the horror, Scream with its main character called Sidney. This could've been done purposely to tell the audience, that the main protagonist is not full female, and that she could have strong features as male protagonists would. It also connotes that the use of unisex names are done in order for the film to relate to both genders of the target audience.

Directors.

Action/Adventure-
Christopher Nolan; he is known for creating blockbusters such as the Batman trilogy and Inception. He started of making low budget films but then went onto bigger and better things.

Justin Lin; he is known for making high action films such as most of The Fast and The Furious films.

Brett Ratner; He is known for directing films such as the Rush Hour Trilogy and is known for directing the pilot episode of the TV Drama, Prison Break. This shows that he has a variety of ways in order to film which engages the audience for its genre.

Horror-
Christopher Gans; he is a French director who specializes in horror and fantasy films. In a way these two have completely different conventions but shows how different his directing ways are appreciated. His most well known horror film is Silent Hill.

Jaume Collet-Serra;  He is a Spanish director and is well known for the remake of House of Wax and The Orphan.

John Carpenter; he is a well known American director who has directed films for many different genres, but the ones for Horror stand out the most. His work for Halloween and Escape from New York were seen as one of the best.

Master Shot.

I missed the first two lessons of Media, but got to review Farhana, Muna and Humaira's Master Shot piece  From this I learnt what a master shot was and how it could be used in various forms. It also showed me that filming continuously for one shot saves a lot of time, and is very quick whilst editing.

Review of shot types used in Preliminary Exercise

We first started to create our rough cut; which was where our shots should be placed, and where the continuity would make sense for the final piece. When looking back on the shots we used, we do have a range of different shot types such as close ups, long shots and a use of the 180' rule,  therefore we have met our target. I think our most successful shot was the long shot of when Palwasha was walking away from Lacey; the lighting with this shot was very good as we didn't plan on how it would be dark when she had given Lacey the envelope and when she walked away she went into the light, the natural lightning went very well with this shot. Even though this means the lighting is not continuous it fits in as this went well with the next shot.
We then started our precision editing; personally I think we have edited the beginning to an intermediate level.  We got the continuity shots at a good place, but then realised there was a jump cut after the entrance of Palwasha through the door therefore we went out and shot again to try and cover that up. This was kind of an issue as Lacey was not wearing the same clothes therefore we just got Palwasha's scene and tried to blur out Lacey. The lighting of the opening was not a big deal as the natural lighting complimented what we were doing.

We need to work on our sound edit as the beginning is natural with the background noise such as the opening of the door and the taping of the shoes, however needs a lot of work done to it. At one point we have cut the sound from a different shot, and placed it in the shot used for the final piece, but the cutting hasn't been done to the bet standard.

Also, the picture edit needs a bit of work done to it as well, as some shots have been placed on top of each other and some repeat. I think we did not get to complete the picture edit to the best quality as we had to go out and re-shoot some shots, which wasted some of our time!

Evaluation on Preliminary Exercise

18/10/12; Started to shoot our pre-lim exercise.
Group Members: Lace, Farhana and Palwasha

Shooting the preliminary exercise was a good way to get use to using different shot types and filming in a continuous order; this helped show what our strength and weaknesses were. We used the same strategy we would normally use when starting to film our final piece  for example we made a quick script and synopsis, and made notes of what shots we would use. We also gave each other roles in order to make the shooting easier.
Our idea consisted of 2 girls in a school, where one was waiting impatiently for the other one to give her a important message. The girl eventually arrives and gives her an envelope which has someone's death written all over it. We decided to film this because it was a good opportunity to use the 180' rule, close ups, and long shots which help give the feel of the environment and the tension they were in.
In general i think once we finish editing it will be a success and would've helped us with ideas for our final piece.

Wednesday 17 October 2012

Opening Sequence for a new feature film; no dialogue.

Setting: In school, a teenage girl and her mum are outside the headteachers office.

(The girl and her mum are anxiously waiting outside the office; the girl is slouched in her chair, and is on her phone)

Camera: Long shot to show the environment the characters are in , and to show body language.
Camera moves along to show next movement.

(The headteacher comes out of her office and shakes hand in order for the two to go in)

Camera: Close up to show the young girls facial expressions which show that she really does not want to be there, which changes into a medium long shot showing the two go in.

(The headteacher goes and sits at her desk, whilst the mother and daughter sit opposite.)

Camera: Long shot to show the difference in environment and to show that they are not in an ordinary classroom. This helps build up the tension through the scene.

(The headteacher looks distraught as she passes along a piece of paper over the table to the mum with her head hung low)

Camera: Extreme close up, to show the facial expression of the teacher and the mum. This is also used to show what is written down on the piece of paper.

(The paper reads, 'i hate my life.' The mum looks over to her daughter with tears in her eyes and mouths 'Why?')

Camera: Close up to show what the mum is saying to her daughter, and to help the audience feel as if they were in her position.

Reflection from Media Workshops.

First Workshop-
This workshop consisted of us exploring the representations of teens such as how colour shows a lot about the two sexes. For example, Mean Girls is based for a teenage girl audience therefore uses a lot of pink in comparison to Kidulthood, aimed more for boys therefore using blue and grey.  We also understood how much thought goes into the final product in order for it to be successful for its audience such as what goes on the front cover of DVDs such as the main image, blurbs and images. I really enjoyed this session as we got to make our own DVD cover for a teenage audience  We got put into groups and went out and took our own images which fitted in with the storyline of the film. The images taken were in school and we used the green screen as well  Once we'd chosen the final imagine we uploaded it onto photo shop and i enjoyed this as I don't normally use Photoshop. Overall, throughout out this workshop we learnt how vital some things are which we do not think of, and as a whole i enjoyed it.

Second Workshop-
I enjoyed the second workshop more as we got to edit a really poorly edited clip we were shown. Through this we looked more into depth with
-Continuity editing which is where shots are eidied in place and time which all fit in.
-The 180 degree rule which is mostly used when two characters are having a conversation and the position of the camera stays on one side of the characters, and does not break the rule by cutting the invisible line.
-The 30 degree rule which is also known as a jump cut which takes place where the camera needs to move at least 30 degrees.
-An establishing shot is a long shot of the location or the setting of where the film/programme takes place which can be easily recognisable.
I also learnt what how well I could edit a video in a short amount of time with out any fancy editing or any sound editing which showed me that if I do not get distracted a lot can be done. This will defiantly help a lot when I shoot for my final piece and when I need to edit them all together. I will also try to use as many of these shots we learnt throughout the workshop.

Essay (Assessment Week); G321

"How is the chicken used as a metaphor on the opening sequence of City of Gods?" (800-1000)

In the opening sequence if City of God the writer portrays a chicken as a main character. In this essay I will be talking about how the chicken has been used as a 'metaphor' for the opening. The definition of a metaphor is a form of expression in which a quality or characteristic is given to a person or thing by using a name/imagine, in this case the chicken. From the first few seconds the genre becomes very clear to us due to the high action chase scene shots. These are very fast and are of knives being scrapped across a surface which suggest that this film is crime and action. Also, these shots suggest that the audience are from a higher age range as these are very deadly weapons. The knife automatically becomes a signifier as it acts for death, murder and gangs. This shows that towards the end, someone will end up getting hurt. The first full shot we see is of a chicken therefore the audience may think that it is something to do with the main character. However it could be used as a metaphor due to what it is representing which could be struggle and escapism of life. In the opening sequence we see shots of lots of poultry where people are cutting vegetables or other things which relate back to the chicken being killed shortly. There is one which is looking around to see what is happing, therefore is trying to escape, the creator give this chicken a human like feel because when it does escape it seems to be very scared due to the extreme close up shots used, which are normally done to show emotions. This links in with what the young boy said towards the end "In the city of god, if you run away they will get you, and if you stay they'll get you too". This suggests that in the city no one can escape what they get themselves into especially if there life depends on it.
This could foreshadow what may happen during the film as we eventually get introduced to the main character.
Due to the escapism of the chicken the evidence get to feel where the film is based as the chicken is on the loose in a part of the Brazilian slums, the visual language such as camera shots were very varied  throughout the opening. The audience are put in the chickens shares when it is on the run as the camera is panning through the allies and short cuts of the slum, which shows that the chicken is trying to escape. Whilst the camera is panning behind the chicken; there has been an addition of non diegetic music which is a fast tempo which connects how the chicken may feel. The aural language such as the non diegetic music seems to be getting even louder as the chicken has escaped this music seems to stop every time the chicken is not in the scene, this could have been added to engage the audience watching. The diegetic sound is coming form the contribution of how the atmosphere in Brazil is like for example hear the clucking of the chicken, suggesting fear and some instruments playing in the background suggesting that in the streets of Brazil line music is normal. The opening sequence shows nearly populated streets and poultry places which shows that even through there are people everywhere in the slum, the chicken is on its own also foreshadowing things which have to come such as someone being stranded and being left alone with literally no hope. Also the colour scheme throughout the trailer seems to be very dull and grey, the chicken is the main thing has a "bright" colour due to it being orangey/brown which connotes the impact the chicken has. The colour of the chicken could also connotes a "fire" like feel making the audience just a bit feared with what's too come. From the way the characters are speaking and by the their actions the audience can tell that the chicken is being treated in such a horrible conditions, this could foreshadow how some of the characters may be treated suggesting that the storyline may include people being treated in vile ways and end up getting hurt. This also helps portray what the genre of the film is.The narrative of the opening sequence changes as the beginning it focuses on all the poultry; especially the chicken, connoting it to be a metaphor of the opening. Then we introduced to what we only assume are the 2 characters, who are young teenage boys having their own conversation where one is extremely interested in his camera. This then comes to the young Brazilian black boy who the film is based on and goes into a flashback of his childhood.
The structure of this narrative is different as it does not have a clear storyline which is easily recognizable and does not start with the main character.

180 Degree Rule whilst filming and a short script.

The 180 Degree rule whilst filming is used when 2 characters in a certain scene are having a conversation where they maintain there left and right shoulders so the camera can cross over.

Quick Script using the 180 Degree Rule-

Homework; Analysis of Se7en and The Godfather (Not finished)

Se7en Analysis- The opening of the film is a quick cut from black to picture. The picture is a extreme close up of a book which suggests that the 'story' has just begun. It then follows a quick close up of painting of 2 hands which seen to be of an old person but the fingers look abnormal. The cut after this is very fast which could have been done to show the audience that they do not need to worry about what the painting means. The opening has lots of different shots which have very fast paced cuts which shows a creepy and different side to the film. The mise en scene throughout the film can be described as very dull, dark and gloomy, this gives a feel of horror or a thriller. For the opening scene there is a lot of non diegetic sound added which all goes with the images and writing shown on the screen. The opening is not very clear on the narrative as there is no dialogue or narration which makes the audience want to watch on and keeps the audience very engaged. Throughout the opening we see disturbing images such as such as really scruffy and dirty looking fingernails which shows that a man has been working very hard, because we see him making something by cutting up pieces of paper and sellotaping it together. In a way, all the shots are repeated in a quick way which has the effect of id blinking twice very fast. The GodFather Analysis- The opening of this film starts of with a cut from black to picture of what we think is the main character saying a quote that could be the main storyline for the film. The quote is "I believe in America..." which is his opinion. The shot is a close up of the character speaking because this shows his facial expressions while he speaks. The continuity shot slowly zooms out of main character who is getting emotional. At the end of the scene we realise that he is talking to others across the table that we cannot see the faces of. The setting of the scene seems to be in a very dark room, where it seems that many other men are accompanied by him.

Sherlock Audience Profile

Backgorund Information-
Sherlock is a British television crime drama that presents a contemporary update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories.

Age-
Various age ranges can watch this drama as Sherlock is a crime and detective drama. Children as young as 9 watch this because at this age many of them want to become 'dectives' and solve crimes when they become older. However this doesnt mean that alduts cant watch it.

Gender-
The majourity of the gender for the audience of this programme would be males due to the protagonist being a male.

Location-
As Sherlock is based in Centeral London many views would be coming from the hub of London. I personally believe that less views would come from the SOuth and East of London as there society is much diefferent to the one shown in London.

Likes and Dislikes-
People who like crime/detective programmews would love to watch this. People who love mysteries would also enjoy watching this. Adults who love watching programmes where they have to think about the stroy and what is going to happen next would also want to watch it.
People who dislike suspense would hate this programme because most of this drama is based on suspense. People who dont like to be a part of mind games would also dislike this.

Job-
People with any jobs could really watch this becasue its a very verse programme. However some people who have stressful jobs may want to come back to watching a programme where they dont have to think.

Analysis of Harry Potter; The Prisoner of Azkaban Opening Seqeunce

Mise En Scene
This whole opening sequence has very dark colours which shows the audience that the movie itself will be dark and in a way scary. We can see that the main character is the one who is trying to get light but from most of his attempts fails. This could represent that throughout the film, he is the one who has to be the 'hero' and save everything.  The design of the scene seems to be magical because we see the main character saying magic spells and and doing magic. This gives off the theme of the movie. Once the title sequence has ended the setting and atmosphere seems to be much more positive as there is lots more lighting used and more dialogue. This could suggest that the throughout the film there are nastily aspects but towards the end there is a happy positive feeling.

Editing
The opening sequence of Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban The first cut is from black to picture which is done in a way in which a torch light is switched on and off that shows the picture revealing but very slowly. In the background there is music playing which makes the audience want to focus more on what's actually going on. There are a lot of special effects used such as the light appearing from the wand and the fact that we see a owl on the drawer top.

Sound
From the very beginning of the trailer there is non diegetic sound. It sounds as if someone is trying to do something but keeps getting interrupted which is what is actually happening and we see once the cut goes to picture. In the opening there is more non diegetic sound used, but eventually it is just the narrative that we can hear. During 1.00-1.10 the sound goes very well with the special effects used which could've been done to show how it is a magical film with lots of other effects. The diegetic sound is something that we would really find in a normal household.

Camera
There are lots of different shot angles used throughout the opening. The opening sequence starts of with a zoom into the household where we are introduced to the main character. We then see the title sequence which eventually brings us back into the room of harry potter. Most of the filming is panning which shows us a real life feel of the household and really brings  us closer to the characters.

Children Of men; Opening Sequence

 Mise En Scene
The opening sequence starts off with a pitch black background where we hear a voice over. Slowly we see people in a cafe, with shocked, concerned, worried faces to what they are hearing on the news. The atmosphere seems to give of a depression like feel due to the dull dark colours seen, whether its from what the people in the scene are wearing or because of what is seen outside the coffee shop such as all the pollution being cause by the transport. The design of the scene seems to be very 'futuristic' as the t.v in the coffee shops seems to be floating in mid air without having a stand with it. Just like outside the buses and advertisements are all animated and can move. There are special effects used when the bomb explodes and lots of the people get hurt. This could be to engage the target audience and to get them ready for more devastating things that could possibly happen. The main character from what we can see isn't that effected by what the news reporter is saying as after he has bought his coffee he doesn't stay to see whats going to happen next. We also hear some people crying in the background which could effect some of the audience members to show that this is an emotional film.
Editing
Children Of Men's opening sequence starts off with a cut from black to picture. This could be done so that the viewers are are paying more attention to what is being said through the voice over. Throughout the the opening sequence most of the shots are continuing as it all leads to the bomb explosion. The camera footage is panning its way through the shots which could have been done so that the audience can feel as if they are apart of what is going on in the scene.
Sound
There is a voice over that starts off the shot, while the screen is black. This could be done to give more emphasis on what is being said, and to show the importance of it. It could also show that the information that is being said is the main storyline for the film. There is diegetic sound throughout the scene such as the music from the t.v and and the noises coming from the cars/motorbikes. This could have been done to show that the setting is something you would get wherever you went. The non diegetic sound which was added such as the explosions and extra noises could have been put in to give off a dramatic effect during the scene. Once the main character leaves the cafe, the sound gets very loud and noisy, and all of a sudden stops; this shows the lead up to the explosion in the cafe, and is a great way to keep the audience engaged with what is going on.
Camera
Throughout the opening sequence the camera is panning which shows the 'on foot' effect. There are lots of different angles which is good because it shows the variety of things happening in each scene. The opening opens with a high angle which shows that it could be the t.v because the first thing you see is a group of shocked people looking up at an angle.
